Nichols rises early to produce gourmet breads
Rodney Nichols started baking with his grandmother when he was a boy. Now, Nichols, a former baker at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, and business parner Mark Forrest, food and beverage director at the casino, are turning their love of fine foods into their own business. Nichols and Forrest -- self described "foodies" -- recently bought the Happy Endings ice cream parlor at Coldwater and Baseline roads in Lake Isabella, renaming the business Your Gourmet Fine Foods. While ice cream is still offered at the business, Forrest and Nichols now offer fresh, homemade baked goods, cakes and dessert items as well as spices, gourmet vinegars and oils, and other gourmet foods. The 4,000-square-foot New England shingle-style home is actually a lot green. It took the state's first platinum-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design award recently. And it is one of just 12 across the country to receive the highest level in LEED certification. .
